Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on Sunday amid ethnic violence in the state. Singh resigned to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, including 14 MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Naga People’s Front (NPF).
Singh said in his resignation letter, “It has been an honor to serve the people of Manipur till now.”
The resignation, which the Congress slammed as “belts”, continues to struggle with ethnic violence between mathis and kukas.
Violence took place on 3 May 2023, as the tribal cookie community and majority, non-Tribal mathis clashed at the proposed inclusion of the latter in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category.

There is a timeline of incidents that have surfaced in Manipur till now.
April 20, 2023: The Manipur High Court directed the state rule to consider the demand by the Meitei community for the ST situation.
28 April, 2023: The forum of indigenous tribal leaders (ITLF) called for a total shutdown against the government.
May 3, 2023: The union of all tribal students, Manipur (ATSUM), took out a ‘tribal solidarity march’ to oppose the inclusion of Meiteis in the ST list. While the rally, thousands of people participated, allegedly ended peacefully, some miscarriage set fire to the Anglo-Kuki War Shatabdi gate, causing clashes.
May 4, 2023: CM Biren Singh called the violence “misunderstanding between two communities”. Three of the 33 seriously injured people died in conflicts on the previous day. In the next few days, the violence continues with arson. CM Singh Order Shoot-on-Vision Order.
May 8, 2023: CM Singh says that 60 people have been killed in the violence so far while 231 were injured. Hearing the case, the Supreme Court directs the Union and State Governments to ensure basic facilities like food, water, etc. in relief camps for internal displaced people.
May 29, 2023: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Manipur.
July 19, 2023: A video of two cookie women is being taken away and a naked parade is being paraded which is provoking nationwide resentment on social media.
July 20, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had talked about violence for the first time amid criticism from the opposition. Referring to the video of two women, PM Modi said that it is “embarrassing for any civil society”.
The Supreme Court took cognizance of the video. Then the Chief Justice of India Dye Chandrachad said: “We will give the government some time to work, or we will take action … it is deeply upset”.
August 10, 2023: The opposition carried forward no-confidence motion against the BJP-led central government.
19 April, 2024: Violence, voter threats and booth capturing reported during the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The Election Commission of India ordered a re -interaction in 11 polling booths on 22 April.
26 April, 2024: On April 30, the incidents of unrest during the second phase of Lok Sabha polling with Parag again in six polling booths gave information again.
September 2024: Following the period of relative calming, stress increased again after the audio clip characterized by an aggressive comment about a community, allegedly appeared on social media from CM Singh. 11 people were killed in the upcoming violence.
October 18, 2024: 19 BJP MLAs wrote PM Modi Demanding to remove Biran Singh from CM Post.
November 2024: After six people missing from a relief camp after a gun fight between cookie militants and security forces, tension was once again found dead, found dead near Manipur-Assam Seema.
Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) withdrew support to the government -led government.
9 February, 2025: Biran Singh resigned from the CM post, when the Congress asked to bring a no -confidence motion against its government.
