The Congress on Monday told the government to postpone its decision on the new Chief Election Commissioner till the Supreme Court hearing on the petition challenging the constitution of the selection panel.
Sources said that during the selection panel meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress was put in front of the Congress by the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
The meeting was held at the South Block Office of the Prime Minister. Home Minister Amit Shah is the third member of the selection panel.
Addressing a press conference soon after the meeting, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi said that by removing the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee, the government has made it clear that it wants control and to maintain the credibility of the Election Commission. Not for
Singhvi did not disclose that in addition to saying in the meeting that Gandhi participated in it.
Sources said on Monday that the Selection Committee recommended the next CEC name to President Drupadi Murmu.
Sources in the government said that the notification, which announced the name of the next CEC, could be released “in the next few hours”.
CEC Rajiv Kumar performed the office on Tuesday to achieve 65 years of age.

He said that the case challenging the new Act to appoint CEC and other ECS is currently pending before the Supreme Court which has issued a notice, and the case is now listed for the next hearing on February 19.
He said that it was just 48 hours and the government should have contacted the apex court for the initial hearing of the petition.
“It was our suggestion that the central government postponed the meeting until after hearing and directed its counsels to be produced and assisted in court so that the hearing was an effective. Only then, a decision can be taken in the earnest, “Sinhavi said.
He said that the executive has the right to enact a law, but said that the Modi government brought the bill of CEC and other Election Commissioners, 2023 into a crowd, without understanding the feeling of decision.
“This law did the contrary, it provided a complete selection by the executive,” he said.
