On Friday (February 21, 2025), Assam Legislative Assembly witnessed bizarre scenes on the attack on Congress MP Rakibul Hussain in Nagaon district.
Speaker Biswajit Damri postponed the House twice within the first 30 minutes as the opposition Congress MLAs made a noise scene after their adjournment motion to discuss the matter.
Leader of the Opposition, Congress’s Debrata Saikia increased the demand for a stay motion as soon as he gathered the House at 9.30 am.
He said that the Chief Minister’s reply on this matter in the assembly did not show any remorse or apologized for the attack on Hussain.
Mr. Hussain, Dhubari MP and his personal security officers (PSOs) were attacked by unknown persons on Thursday (February 20, 2025) in Roopoihat in Nagaon district.
Congress MPs were on their way to attend a meeting of party employees in Gunomari village under Rupohi police station on a two -wheeler when a group of people attacked with cricket bats, whose face black clothes Were covered and shouting slogans. Against the MP, the police said.
The DGP later said that the MP was unwell but two of his PSOs had suffered minor injuries and they are being provided necessary treatment.
Speaker Damri said that the adjournment motion could not be allowed as the discussion on the finance bill was scheduled for the day.
Minister Pijush Hazarika responded to Saikia’s allegations and did not work against the government’s allegations, claiming that the attackers have been identified and action is being initiated.
Dissatisfied with the response, the Congress MLAs created a storm in the well of the House and made noise scenes.
BJP MLAs also shouted back to opposition MLAs, claiming that their leaders were attacked during the Congress rule but no action was taken.
As soon as the ruckus continued, the speaker postponed the house for 10 minutes. As soon as it was convinced, Congress MLAs once again came into the well and demanded a discussion on the issue. As soon as the noise scenes continued, the speaker Damri postponed the proceedings for another five minutes.
