New Delhi:
On Saturday, at least 15 people were killed and several injured in a stampede at New Delhi railway station, which were due to a sudden crowd of passengers, who tried to ride in trains for Maha Kumbh in prayer.
In a statement, the Railway Ministry said that a high-level inquiry has been ordered in the “unfortunate incident”.
The injured were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) hospital for treatment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) said that many people were present on platform number 14 when the Shradragraj Express train was standing on the stage. The official said in a statement that Swantanani Express and Bhubaneswar RJDhani Express were delayed and passengers of these trains were also present at platform numbers 12, 13 and 14.
Witnesses said that due to a large crowd at the station, many passengers fainted due to suffocation.
