‘Ek, two, three’: Shocking ragging video shows torture at Kerala Medical College, NHRC took cognizance – Times of India

The scene that appeared on Thursday showed a junior student tied to a cot, his body is repeatedly pierced with a compass, while taunting and mocked by senior students.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the disturbing ragging incident at Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala, called it “morally condemnable” and “a serious violation of human rights”. The panel has sought a detailed action report from the Director General of Police (DGP), Director General of Police (DGP) within ten days.
The scene that appeared on Thursday showed a junior student tied to a cot, his body is repeatedly pierced with a compass, while taunting and mocked by senior students. According to the police, the victim was subjected to frightening acts, in which dumbbells were placed in her private parts and facial creams were put in her mouth.
NHRC, citing a complaint, said that students of Wayanad, Malappuram and Kottayam were involved in transferring money to Juniors and subjugating them to both physical and mental torture. The complaint also alleged that a student was threatened with a knife on his neck, while others were bound and were surrounded by sharp weapon wounds.
NHRC saw in its proceedings, “These actions are not only morally condemnable, but also illegal.”
Five arrested, investigation expanded
Following the complaint of a victim, five senior students – Samuel Johnson (20), Rahul Raj (22), Jeeva (18), Rijil Jeth (20), and Vivek (21) – were arrested and sent to judicial custody. Police suspect that more suffer may be suffering and are recording statements to determine the limit of misuse.
The accused have been booked under the prohibition of classes of the Ragging Act and the Joint Code of India (BNS), 2023, which relates to dangerous weapons, forced recovery and injuries with criminal intimidation.
Campus resentment and official reactions
Student organizations in Kerala condemned the incident. Students Federation of India (SFI) called it shocking, while Kerala Students Union (KSU) insisted that such cruelty should not be shifted. The Akhil Bharti Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has filed complaints with the Vice Chancellor of Kerala, NHRC and the Vice Chancellor of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), who demands a thorough questioning.
College officials claimed that they had not received a complaint before February 11, acting principal Dr. Saying with Sulekha that immediate action was taken when he was informed. The accused students have been suspended, and the college has promised full cooperation with legal proceedings.
Along with NHRC and the police, with expanding its investigation, the case has increased the pressure on authorities to ensure justice for the victim and to ensure strict enforcement against ragging in educational institutions.
