Members of Desia Thenidia Nadigal Innipu Vivasaagal Sangam staged a demonstration at Mussiri in Tiruchi district on Saturday, demanding a plan to approve a plan to remove flood discharge from Karnataka in Karwari and Aaparu.
The association said the project would help effectively use flood discharge from Karnataka during the monsoon season by feeding around 1,000 irrigation tanks to benefit five lakh acres of cultivable land.
“The Karnataka barely follows the monthly schedule to release Cauvery Waters as the Cauvery Water Disputes have been set by the Tribunal and the Supreme Court. Often, it discharges huge amounts of water in a short time at the time of floods. But Tamil Nadu can store only 94 TMCT water in Mettur Dam and flows in the rest of the sea. This happens almost every other year. Association President P. Ayyyanu said that flood discharge can be effectively used by connecting Covery and Ayyaru and Aapaparu rivers.
The association demanded the construction of a canal from the Metur Dam to remove the surplus flow, which said, this said, in addition to benefiting about five lakh acres of cultivable land in Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchi, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts 1,000. The irrigation will help fill the tank. The plan will help improve the water table. The state government should immediately investigate the plan and approval fund for the project, it was demanded.
Shri Ayakanu said that similar demonstrations will be organized in Thuriyur and Upapiliapuram of Tiruchi districts in the coming weeks. “If the government still failed to focus on our petition, we will resort to a waiting movement in Chennai,” he said.
