In 1950, from around 2.5 billion to 2022, from the estimated 8 billion, the world’s population has increased rapidly in the last 70 years. It is estimated to be 9.7 billion by 2050 and 10.4 billion by 2100. This development will not be the same in all countries. While some will see a major population bounce, others may experience a constant fall due to changing birth rates, migration trends and other factors.
Here is a list by the United Nations (United Nations) Population Division, which identifies the top 10 countries with the highest population of up to 2100.
India
It is not surprising that India will be the most populous country in the world even after 75 years. In 2023, India handled China to become the most populous country, and up to 2100 is expected to increase for several more decades with an estimated 1.53 billion people.
China
China’s population was at its peak in 2022. While it will see a decline in its population, by the end of the century, China’s population will still be around 771 million.
Nigeria
Africa is ready to see an exponential growth in its population in the coming years. Nigeria will become the third most populous country after India and China by 2100 with an estimated 546 million people.
Pakistan
Pakistan will continue to grow in terms of population, one of the already densely populated countries. By 2100, its population can reach an estimated 487 million people.
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
DRC will experience a significant growth, reaching a population of 431 million people by 2100. Currently, Congo has a population of 110 million, and it is estimated to increase by 110% by 2050.
United States
America is currently the third most populous country in the world. By 2100, it is expected to reach 394 million, most of its population growth is responsible for immigration after the natural birth rate.
Ethiopia
Ethiopia, currently a population of 133 million, will see a rapid growth, which is expected to increase by 323 million.
Indonesia
Currently, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country, and it will not increase the population much. Currently, its population is 284 million, and according to the United Nations Population Division, it will reach 297 million by the end of the 21st century.
Tanzania
The population of Tanzania is expected to grow four times by the end of this century. So far, the country’s population is 61.7 million and is expected to increase by 2100 to 244 million.
Egypt
Egypt will also experience a significant increase in its population, reaching the estimated 225 million by the beginning of the new century.
Such population changes are mainly affected by three factors: fertility rate, longevity and migration. While the high fertility rate in African countries is the reason behind their population explosion, a large number of elderly people in developed countries are seeing a decline in their population. Meanwhile, migration also plays a role in the trend of population.
Population growth also comes with its set of challenges. Overpopulation can stress resources, increase environmental decline and put pressure on existing infrastructure, healthcare and education. On the other hand, countries that experience population growth can also turn it into an opportunity by investing more in education, employment generation and healthcare.
