A 45 -year -old tribal man was killed in an attack of a wild elephant in Nolpuzha Panchayat in Wayanad on Monday night, marking such a deadly in the state within 24 hours. The victim, known as Manu, a resident of the Kapapad tribal township near the Tamil Nadu border, was allegedly caught by an elephant trunk and thrown during a violent encounter.
The incident occurred when Manu was returning home after buying groceries. Manu died after a search operation by his relatives after failing to return home. His wife, who went to the shop with him, is also missing, according to a report on Manorama, is raising further concerns. The search for him continues as the community struggles with a shocking tragedy.
The deadly attack comes only a few hours after another incident in Idukki district, where a 45 -year -old woman, Sofia, was killed by a wild elephant near Peruvanathanam. Sophia, a resident of Commonpara, had gone to bathe in a stream along with the jungle boundary when she was killed. After failing to return home, his son found his body. The police suspect that Sophia may face the elephant leading to a deadly attack.
The back-to-back incidents have expressed displeasure among the local residents, who staged protests demanding immediate action to address the recurring issue of the human-wolf struggle in the region.
Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi visited Forest Fringe Hamlets in her constituency on Monday. She joined the local villagers and assured her of their support in dealing with man-push struggles. Later, addressing a gathering of party employees, Gandhi emphasized the need for collective efforts to face the challenges faced by tribal communities, including education and inadequate access to essential services, according to a report on PTI. .
