New fastag rules from today: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have introduced two new Fastag rules – one on ‘late transactions’ and the other on ‘chargeback’. Effective changes from February 17, 2025 are aimed at reducing toll payments and disputes. Here the latest changes are given in Fastag rules.
Delayed transactions can punish
– Fastag users may have to pay additional charges if according to the Moneycontrol report, their toll transactions are processed 15 minutes after the vehicle toll reader is passed.
– If the fastag user’s wallet has insufficient balance, the toll operator will be attributed to the delay, according to the updated National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) guidelines.
-If the amount is cut despite the delay, the users can increase a dispute, but only after the 15-day cooling period.
Chargeback rules
Under the new rules, banks can increase the chargeback for incorrect deduction related to blacklist or low-equilibrium fastags only after 15 days.
– If a chargeback is lifted before the cooling period ends, it will be automatically rejected with the error code 5290 (the cooling period not completed).
– The date of implementation for these changes in the NETC system will be declared separately.
If Fastag is inactive for more than 60 minutes before transaction
– According to the latest rules, if a fastag has become inactive for more than 60 minutes before reaching the vehicle toll and remains inactive for 10 minutes, the transaction will be rejected.
– Due to this rule, the reasons will be shown the reasons of the rejected payment code 176.
– Effective date: February 17, 2025.

– Keep enough balance in your fastag wallet.
– Monitor transactions time to avoid unexpected delays.
– If a wrong fee is deducted, wait 15 days before increasing the dispute.
