Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Friday (May 30, 2025) rejected the “weapon of water” and warned that Pakistan would not allow India to cross India by catching India. Indus Water Treaty In Setting And is putting millions of lives in danger for narrow political gains.
Shri Sharif was addressing a three-day international conference on the conservation of glaciers in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, when he provoked the issue of Indo-Pakistan Bilateral Bilateral Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

“Unilateral and illegal decisions of India, in the Indus Water Treaty, which operates the water sharing of the Indus basin, is deeply regretted,” Dawn Told Mr. Sharif quoted.
“Millions of lives should not be held hostage for narrow political gains, and Pakistan will allow it to be allowed to participate by more than 2,500 delegates from 80 United Nations member states and 70 international organizations, and Pakistan will never allow the red line to cross the red line.”
The event is being hosted by the Government of Tajikistan in collaboration with the United Nations, UNESCO, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Asian Development Bank, and other major partners as a historical moment for climate ambition, glacier conservation and international cooperation.
Mr. Sharif’s comment came soon after India Terrorist attack in Pahgam on 22 AprilAnnounced IWT among other punitive measures. The IWT was signed by the two countries in 1960 to address the water dispute between them and share the water of six main rivers of the Indus Basin.
As DawnMr. Sharif also touched all relevant issues, including glacial protection, Pakistan’s climate vulnerability, 2022 floods in Pakistan, global climate action and responsibility, scientific estimates on glacial melt, water weapons and calls to protect the shared destiny of humanity.
The Prime Minister said, “The world today keeps fresh mark using traditional weapons in Gaza, which has left deep wounds. As it was not enough, we are now looking at a dangerous new low -water weapon,” the Prime Minister said.
He said that Pakistan, being home to over 13,000 glaciers, was most concerned because the glaciers contributed about half of the annual flow to the Indus river system – “Our civilization, culture and lifeline of economy”.
“Five great rivers that shape our geographical scenario – indus, jhelum, chainb, Ravi, and twisters – all depend on the stability of the glacial systems. It makes Pakistan one of the weakest countries for any climate change that affects glaciers,” he said.
He stated that Pakistan had faced glacial melt in the form of devastating floods in 2022, which destroyed the crops standing in millions of acres, thousands of houses as well as infrastructure – despite half a percent of the country’s emissions and being one of the 10 weakest countries.
