According to the MHA document, India has signed extradition treaties with 48 countries/regions, while it has entered the extradition system with 12 countries. By December 2024, 23 fugitive criminals were brought back to India.
26/11 accused Tavavur Hussain Rana has been extradited to India on 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and is likely to be registered in a high security ward in Tihar Jail. 64 -year -old Rana is a Pakistan -born Canadian national and a close aide of David Coleman Headley, aka Dood Gilani, one of the main conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is an American citizen.
Rana’s extradition comes in India as his final attempt to avoid extradition failed after the US Supreme Court Justice rejected his application.
- Tavavur Rana: Rana, 64, was a close associate of David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, Alias Dood Gilani. Due to this attack, 166 people were killed as 10 Pakistani militants, as they carried out a coordinated attack in crucial public places in the city. Tahwur Rana is being extradited from the United States.
- Abu Salem: Abu Salem was a prominent accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts and was also facing allegations of murder and forced recovery. He was brought from Portugal to India in 2005.
- Ravi priest: The priest arrested in South Africa was brought from Senegal to India in 2020. Underworld Don, Ravi Pujari, were wanted in more than 200 cases, according to media reports.
- Christian Mitchell: Mitchell was the main middleman in the AgustaWhstland VVIP Chopper scam. He was extradited from UAE in 2018. His extradition was seen as India’s major achievement in dealing with corruption cases in defense deals.
- Chhota Rajan: Dawood Ibrahim’s top ally, Chhota Rajan, was extradited from Indonesia. His extradition in India is seen as a major achievement of the country in breaking D-Company’s global network.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, until December 2024, India has signed extradition treaties with 48 countries/regions and entered the extradition system with 12 countries. In particular, more than 60 requests for extradition of fugitive criminals made by India are considering only the United States officials.
A total of 178 requests have been made for countries for extradition including persons involved in terrorist activities in the country. Between 2019 and December 2024, a total of 23 persons were successfully extradited.
