The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday would have heard a PIL challenging the uniform civil code implemented in the state. A Division Bench of the High Court, including Chief Justice G Narendra and Justice Ashish Nithani, will hear the matter.
Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed by Suresh Singh Negi, a bhimtal resident and alumni leader, challenging various provisions of UCC, especially the people created for live-in relationships reported the PTI.
PIL also alleged that the UCC disregarded Muslims, Parsis and other methods of marriage.

On 27 January, Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to take such steps to UCC. The implementation of UCC was in line with the BJP government’s commitment to the people of the state before the 2022 assembly elections, where the party came to power with a large mandate for a second consecutive term.
Some legal experts have shook the UCC, saying that it would be a violation of the right to privacy of the people.
Muslim groups, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and several other organizations, have also condemned the implementation of UCC, which is called “unfortunate and harmful to the country”.
In a joint statement last month, AIMPLB and various Muslim organizations claimed that the UCC law in Uttarakhand is an attack on the fundamental rights of unconstitutional, unconstitutional and citizens.

He said that the law is “absolutely unacceptable” because it reduces the freedom of citizens including Muslims, to practice its religion and follow its teachings, which is guaranteed by the Constitution.
