The District Crime Branch has presented a charge sheet in the Vadkara hit-and-run case of February 2024, claiming the life of an elderly woman and left her nine-year-old granddaughter in a coma state.

Accused, Methil Poonathl Shejel, who was renamed from Dubai, was charged under Section 279 (rash driving), 304A (due to negligence due to 338 (due to negligent death) (serious injury by an act that has a serious injury to human life Puts in danger), and 201 (missing the evidence of the Indian Penal Code). The charge sheet was filed on Friday (15 February) in Kozhikode Vadkara Judicial First Class Magistrate Court.

The incident took place on 17 February 2024 on the national highway in Kozikode district in Kozhikode district. According to police, Mr. Shezel allegedly hit a 68 -year -old woman, who was identified as a child, and her grandson, Dishna, at a high speed they were crossing the road around 10 pm. The elderly woman died on the spot, while her grandson was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. She remains in a coma position.

The accused allegedly fled from the spot and repaired his vehicle to cover the incident. He also claimed insurance benefits to repair a private workshop in Vadkara. The police took 10 months to track the vehicle involved in the accident and the suspect who fled to Dubai on 14 March 2024.

Dysp VV Beni of the District Crime Branch, who submitted the charge sheet, said that there were about 10 witnesses in the case, including the person repairing the car of Mr. Shajil after the accident. The police have presented documents related to the car, its insurance claims and the mechanic bill, while the car itself and the broken glass serve as physical evidence.

“Headlights and bumpers were not found and hence it could not be included. But we have pictures that Mr. Shejel presented for insurance claims ”, DSPP said.

The Nadapuram police had earlier filed a case against him to make documents to receive insurance claims.
