Vaishnavi Edkar went down fighting 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 in a three-hour duality in the women’s tennis semi-finals for Slovakia’s E-Ender Mary at the World University Games in Rhine-Guar, Germany.
This was a good run by 20 -year -old Vaishnavi, who downed only 19 games in winning the first four rounds in a draw of 64. The effort received him a rare tennis medal in the Games.
In fact, it was the only individual medal for the Indian party so far.
Vaishnavi was close to winning another medal in a mixed doubles with Atharva Sharma, but the pair was beaten by Japanese pair of Natsuki Yoshimoto and J Friend in the quarter -finals. Vaishnavi and Atharva won two rounds ago without leaving a set against the teams of Colombia and USA.
India have so far won five medals including one gold and one silver, but there were team medals in four medals, archery and badminton except Vaishnavi’s tennis efforts.
