The 1988-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, Gyanesh Kumar, is set to play the top role in the Election Commission of India.
The Law Ministry on Monday announced that the IAS officer, who is a native of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, was appointed as the next Chief Election Commissioner on Monday, the Law Ministry said.

His term will run till January 26, 2029 before announcing the schedule of the next Lok Sabha election from EC.
The 1989 batch Haryana-Cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Vivek Joshi, has been appointed as Election Commissioner.
During his tenure as the 26th CEC, Kumar will oversee the Bihar assembly elections later this year and Kerala and Puducherry assembly elections in 2026.
Similarly, he will look after the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, which are also going to be held in 2026.
