Governor of former Reserve Bank of India was appointed as Shaktishant Das Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Saturday. With this announcement, his career was extended to a new height.

This will be the first time PK Mishra will have two Principal Secretaries of the Prime Minister, who had already been holding one post since 2019.

Who is Santikanta Das?

67 year old Shaktikanta Das There is a 1980-batch IAS officer, who completed his term as the Governor of RBI last December after extended in 2021.

Before being appointed as the RBI Governor in 2018, Das first captured the posts of Revenue Secretary and Economic Affairs Secretary in the government.

Santikanta Das was born on 26 February 1957 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He completed his undergraduate and master’s degree in history from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi.

Das, who is the former IAS officer of the 1980 batch Tamil Nadu cadre, first worked for the Tamil Nadu government as well as the central government.

As an RBI governor for six years, the DAS carried forward India’s economy through turbulent stages, including geopolitical stress, high inflation and Kovid -19 epidemic.

The DAS was ranked in the top three central bankers for two consecutive years by Global Finance Magazine and was also given a ‘A+’ rating in the 2024 Central Banker Report Card.

He was re -appointed due to his effective management in controlling inflation and facing challenging monetary conditions and extended his tenure in 2021 for three years.

During its last four years as the Governor of RBI, DAS played a major role in managing the economic growth rate of more than 7%.

He played an important role in leading demonetisation initiative under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.

Das had previously served as Secretaries for both the Department of Economic Affairs and Revenue Department.

After retiring, DAS was appointed as a member of the 15th Finance Commission and played the G20 Sherpa of India.

Working in the Finance Ministry, DAS played an active role in preparing eight Union Budgets.

He represented India as its alternative governor in various international financial institutions such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), World Bank, New Development Bank (NDB), and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

He also became the face of India on various global forums like IMF, G20, BRICS and SAARC.
