West Bengal Finance Minister Chandra Bhattacharya on Wednesday presented a budget of Rs 3.89-million for 2025-26 with significant attention to social welfare, and an increase of four percent in dearness allowance (DA) for state government employees (DA) Announced

The government also unveiled a series of infrastructure and agricultural development projects in its budget, allocated important funds for rural connectivity, river erosion control and agricultural assistance initiative.

Bhattacharya announced that the state government would increase the dearness allowance (DA) by four percent from April 1, 2025.

This will bring the total DA to 18 percent for the employees of the state government, which will give them very important relief, amid rising inflation.

Additional DA Hike comes as part of the government’s efforts to improve the financial position of its workforce and ensure appropriate compensation for their services.

Bhattacharya said, “With this four percent increase in DA, we are confirming our commitment to the welfare of our employees,” Bhattacharya said, underlining the state’s attention on the good of his workforce.

The announcement is expected to reduce financial stress on thousands of government employees in various departments, so that the relationship between the state administration and its employees can be strengthened.

Before the 2026 assembly elections, a major attraction of the final full budget of Mamta Banerjee government is an allocation of Rs 1,500 crore for the improvement of rural roads across the state, it aims to increase connectivity and increase economic activities in remote areas. ,

To address the continuous issue of river erosion, the government separated Rs 200 crore, which would provide very important relief to the weak river communities.

Focusing its attention on the infrastructure, the government approved Rs 500 crore for the construction of a 4.75 km long bridge over the Ganges in Gangasagar, which is expected to facilitate smooth access to pilgrims and to promote local economies.

Under the ‘Bangler Bari’ project, the state has planned to construct 16 lakh new houses in the upcoming financial year, and a proposal of Rs 9,600 crore has been allocated for the initiative.

In bid to increase housing support for the underprivileged, the state had allocated Rs 14,000 crore under the scheme last year.

The objective of this initiative is to provide financial assistance for the construction of houses for the poor and marginalized sections of the society.
