A knife -armed man stole nearly Rs 15 lakh from a bank near Chalakudi in Thrissur on Friday. The CCTV footage of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows the suspect to take the heir out peacefully. The robber, wearing a helmet, jacket and gloves, arrived on a scooter and branded a knife to scare the staff.
According to the police, according to the New Indian Express, the accused entered the bank in the afternoon when most of the staff members were on a break of lunch. At that time only bank manager and an attendant were present. They locked some employees in a room before breaking the cash counter and filled their bags with cash bundles.
The footage also caught him speaking in Hindi, although the police have not dismissed the possibility that it was a deliberate strategy to mislead investigators. According to PTI, a senior police officer said, “Speaking Hindi does not mean that man is not Malayali. It can be a strategy to mislead everyone.”
Chalakudi Police Station received a warning about the robbery through the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and immediately sent a team to the spot. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to expedite the investigation with primary attention to catching the suspect. The police have identified the direction in which the accused escaped and is working to track it.
Officials are also reviewing the safety measures of the bank, although the officials emphasized that the priority is to apprehend the culprit immediately.
