Food prices continued the trend in January, with Latest consumer price index Showing an increase of 0.4%. This growth was affected by a dramatic increase in egg prices, which saw their biggest monthly growth since June 2015.
Eat at home
Food in the home index rose 0.5% in January, as four of the six major grocery food groups increased. The most important change came under the category of meat, poultry, fish and eggs, which jumped 1.9% a month. This growth was largely inspired by an increase of 15.2% in the prices of eggs, which was responsible for about two-thirds of the total monthly food on the increase in the house.
Price changes for other grocery categories include:
- Nonclicolic beverage index increased by 0.9%.
- Both home and dairy products saw a moderate growth of 0.3%in both other foods.
- Affected by 3.3% reduction in breakfast grain prices, grains and bakery products fell 0.4%.
- Fruit and vegetable index declined by 0.5%, with a significant decline in tomatoes (-2.0%) and other fresh vegetables (-2.6%).
Given the big picture, the food in the home index has increased by 1.9% in the last one year. The category of meat, poultry, fish and eggs increased this growth with an increase of 6.1%, dramatically affected by an increase of 53.0% in egg prices over a 12 -month period. Other remarkable annual growth includes nonclogic beverages (+2.2%), dairy products (+1.2%), and other food (+0.8%) at home.
Food away from home
Food away from the home index rose 0.2% in January, with limited service food to 0.3% and full service food increased to 0.1%.
In the last 12 months, food has increased by 3.4% in food away from the home index, both limited and full service has increased 3.3% with food.
