Namibia founder President Sam Nujoma dies at 95 – Times of India

Sam nuzomaThe first President and leader of Namibia who directed the country to independence from South Africa in 1990 died on Saturday at the age of 95.
His death was announced on Sunday by Nangolo Mbumba, the current President of Namibia. He said that the New York Times said that Nuzoma died in a hospital in Windhok after being ill for three weeks.
Nuzoma was an important person in Namibia’s liberation struggle to South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) since its formation in 1960. He led a Soviet -backed guerrilla army in a long war against South Africa, who captured Namibia despite international condemnation.
While Nujoma himself did not participate in the war directly, he was the face of resistance while balanced diplomacy with armed struggle.
Freedom was eventually achieved through an American-block agreement, which saw South Africa extracted from Namibia, which in exchange for the removal of Cuba soldiers from Angola to the New York Times. Despite being out of the talks, Nuzoma became the first President of Namibia and remained in power for 15 years, acquired a constitutional amendment to achieve a constitutional amendment for the third term in 1999.
His leadership helped bring national harmony and economic stability to Namibia, even political opponents, according to news agency AP, accepted his role in uniting a deeply divided nation.
However, Nuzoma was also known for his autocratic tendency, anti-Western rhetoric and controversial stance, including Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and his support for his rigorous homosexuality comments. In 2001, he warned that gay and homosexuals would be arrested, jailed or deported.
Despite his fiery leadership style, Nuzoma remained a revered man in Namibia. His image appears on the national currency, and a six -meter long statue stands outside the Namibian Freedom Museum. Even after retirement, he remained politically outspoken, according to AFP, he was calling for the renaissance of Germany’s compensation for the massacre of his colonial era of Hero and Nama people.
The legacy of the era of freedom of Africa, Nuzoma’s legacy places him in data like Nelson Mandela, Kenneth Kaunda and Samora Machel.
