TN Minister says Chennai is a safe place for women

Social Welfare and Women Strong Minister P. Geeta Jeevan Jeevan Stops competitions for the children of homes run by the welfare and special service department of the state government, on Tuesday

Chennai is one of the safe cities for women, where students from all places come to study, Tamil Nadu’s Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. The Gita Life Minister said in the city on Tuesday (February 11, 2025). In other states, events [of crimes against women] He was “hidden”, he alleged.

Allegedly responding to a query on the comment made by Governor RN on the safety of women in Chennai, Ms. Jeevan said: “He can speak out of ignorance. Or he is aware but still chooses to speak in this way. If he compares with other states, he would know. ,

During a conversation with reporters, the minister said: “Chennai is a safe place. Students from different places come here for education in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, he could not make such a dispute with one or two incidents. ,

In other states, crimes against women were “hidden” and were not being reported, but in Tamil Nadu, the media was bringing all the incidents to reveal, the minister said.

Asked about criticism on crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu, he said: “We should encourage and motivate them to come forward to give our complaints, and we should protect them.”

Earlier, in many cases, the parents were “suppressed” to complain to them, but now it was not, the minister said. Recalling a recent incident related to the railway, the minister said that since then, many calls have been made on the helpline.

“Women and children now have awareness, and many of them are coming forward to make complaints. Another reason is the media that is bringing out all the events. ,

He said that the Social Welfare Department is organizing several awareness programs with education and police departments. In the first phase, such awareness programs were being organized for students of classes 9 to 12, he said.

“We are sharing the helpline number and assure them that the privacy of the complainants will be protected. So far, the confidentiality of the complainants has not come out, except an incident, at the University of Anna, ”he said, saying that the Tamil Nadu government was not responsible for it. “NIC has accepted it,” he said.

Ms. Jeevan said that the increasing number of complaints through the helpline, it was 1098, 181 or 1930, only signs of increased awareness. Earlier, in the day, he flagged off competitions for the children of homes run by the welfare and special service department of the state government.
