US President Donald Trump has announced a plan to sell advanced F -35 fighter jets to India, a step that can greatly promote military relations between the two countries.
Announced as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Thursday, visited the White House, returning to Trump’s office and marked his first visit after his second term on 20 January.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Trump praised India as a major strategic partner and highlighted the growing cooperation among the nations. “From this year, we will increase military sales in India with several billions of dollars. We are also eventually paving the way for India. F-35 stealth fighters,” He said.
Trump highlighted his strong coordination with PM Modi, called him a “very difficult negotiator” and took into consideration the “special bond” among his nations.
The two leaders confirmed their commitment to strengthen trade and defense relations, even Trump maintained his difficult stance on economic issues with most parts of the world.
If the F-35 stealth fighter deal passes, India will join a special group in the countries of India-including NATO colleagues, Israel and Japan-who operate the state-of-the-art aircraft.
Beyond the military agreements, trade discussions took the center stage. Trump, who has long criticized India’s tariff, repeated his concerns, called them “inappropriate” and “very strong”. Earlier in the day, he announced new mutual tariffs on all countries including India, increasing uncertainty on future trade relations. However, PM Modi hit in a more optimistic voice, saying that both sides will work towards “mutually beneficial trade agreement”, focusing on oil and gas. Trump also highlighted the massive economic cooperation, stating that the two countries planned to invest in infrastructure projects including ports, railways and underground cables as part of the trade route connecting India to Israel and Europe. .
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk Also joined Trump’s discussion with PM Modi. The newly appointed Dogi Head, who played an impressive role in the administration, also held a private meeting with the Indian leader, questioned whether he was working in an official or professional capacity. Modi later shared pictures of his meeting with Indian authorities, showing a musk.
This journey also touched the immigration policies. India recently accepted an American military flight, with a 100 hut migrants as part of Trump’s immigration crack, who criticize Indian opposition leaders. However, PM Modi defended the verdict, saying that unspecified Indians in the US were being exploited by human smugglers. He said, “Any verified Indian who is illegally in America, we are fully prepared to take them back to India,” he said.
In turn, Trump announced that the US would extradite Tahavur Hussain Rana, a suspect associated with the deadly Mumbai attacks of 2008. Saying him “one of the very evil people of the world”, Trump confirmed that Rana would proceed to the long pending extradition after Rana lost his appeal in the US Supreme Court.
