The 2025 version of LollaPalooza India will return to Mumbai on 8-9 March, with an incredible lineup of international artists along with the Indian. Excerpt from interview:
First, it is nothing, but Lolapluja is the first gig of thieves in India for 2025. What do you think about performing here for the first time?
Well, I think we are excited. This is the main thing. It is quite rare after 10 years that you have to go to an entire new country and you have never gone to India in any capacity. So I think we are just excited. I will look at the culture and see what is all this. It is always going to a new place and seeing that people are your music. So hopefully, the fingers have crossed.
From the cemetery CT EP to Dead Club City, your voice continues to develop. Can you tease any upcoming projects, albums or music directions, about which you are excited about?
We are actually a conscious effort to take a break after this album because for every other album, we have gone straight to the studio. We call it a back-to-back touring record, but this is the first time we have tried to give ourselves some time to recover. We are away from the road and then can really focus on trying to make the next record the best. So we have not started yet, but what else people can expect for the set, I think it’s anytime we play a country for the first time, we just go to try to play and play our biggest songs and play Are and make it equally good. We can probably do.
India has a rich and diverse music landscape from Bollywood to Indies and classical music. Have you discovered any Indian artists or sounds that have attracted your attention?
Do you know what? It is fun when Connor and I first met in school; We met in the music class and we started with world music from everywhere in the world. History in Indian culture and Indian music and Indian music is something that I think you teach a lot of Western schools when you reach a high level of music education. So yes, from that side of things, of course I am familiar with such things like a Benger and such things. I cannot say that it greatly impresses our music, but who knows what the next album will be.
Your music often mixes raw spirit with powerful devices. Do you get any inspiration in world music?
I would not say that we especially attract singular or some artists. I think that is why our music is so diverse. We always draw from a very broad and diverse selection of things that inspire us. And you know, it is not necessary that there are only things that are close to the house. This can happen from anywhere in the world. Yes, sometimes it is like music. Sometimes, it can be just like a feeling when traveling or as I am inspired by a film or even like a credit at the end of the film.
There was a film that I was watching and a company called yesterday’s clothes and this is where one of our songs comes from. So I think it is just open like everything and to see what you can do with it.
Lolpalooza has developed in a global event. What do you think how the festival experience changes when performing in different cultures, and you are the most excited in India’s music scene?
I think we have no hope of beauty and coming to a new place. We do not know what is going to happen. And I think when you are touring for 10, 11 years and the amount of places and cities and people you play, you get a feeling and you get used to where you go Are you and what you want to expect. So the beauty of the fact is that we have never gone to India that we do not know what is expected. So this is going to be a wonderful experience to be the first time and just see what really happens.
Since you will be in India, is something special that you are eager to experience – food, place, culture?
I mean, we are a great fan of Indian food. I cook a lot of Indian food at home. In particular, the thing I am trying to master at this time is Dal Makhani, which is quite difficult because you have to cook it for so long. But yes, I think food is one of the things we are different from Gig, this is definitely something that we cannot wait to experience. Yes, we usually take a lot of time, such as outside the gig, just roaming the city and trying to absorb it and see what happens and get some adventures. So we will see.
Finally, what message do you have for your Indian fans that are waiting for you to see for so long?
Well, thank you for waiting and keeping so much patient. We will be equally excited. We can’t wait for you to come and play. It is going to be a wonderful gig. So spread the word and we will be with you in a few weeks and hopefully it will not be so long until we come back.
