Five senior nursing students have been arrested for allegedly subjected to their juniors for the months of cruel ragging at Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala. The Kottayam Gandhinagar police on Wednesday registered a case after filing a complaint to three first year students, which gave details of the horrific misconduct they tolerated.
The accused, identified as Shamuel Johnson (20), Jeeva NS (19), Rahul Raj KP (22), Rijiljith C (21) and Vivek NV (21), are the second and third year general nursing students. According to the complaint, ragging began in November 2023 and increased to the peak of physical and psychological torture reported on Manorama.
The victims alleged that seniors naked them, placed dumbbells on their private parts and provoked injuries using compass and other sharp objects. Seniors allegedly poured lotion on wounds and forced juniors to apply cream on their face, head and mouth. The ragging occurred mainly in the men’s hostel, where the victims were repeatedly subjected to insults and violence.
Apart from physical abuse, the seniors allegedly withdraw money from juniors every Sunday to buy liquor. The situation reached a braking point on Monday when a juniors were brutally beaten to refuse to pay. The incident inspired the victims to inform their parents, who then advised them to contact the police.
Following the complaint, the college principal suspended the accused students, and the police arrested them as per a report on PTI under the prohibition of the 2011 Ragging Act.
Ragging has been banned on a long -lasting issue in Indian colleges for years, but such incidents remain on the surface, which highlighted the need for strong preventive measures and awareness campaigns.
