Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) that Parliament would believe in its government on June 11, as the country would have to face “new political reality”.
He called for a vote after his political ally, Liberal Warsaw Mayor, losing Poland’s weekend presidential election to the conservative Karol Navarki.
“We are starting the session in a new political reality,” Shri Tusk said, at the beginning of a cabinet meeting in Warsaw. “Political reality is new, because we have a new President. But the Constitution, our obligations and expectations of citizens have not changed. In Poland, the government rules, which is a great obligation and respect.”
The government of Mr. Tusk runs most of the day-to-day cases in Poland. It also exists apart from the presidency, but the President has the power to vetoos and influence foreign policy, and the victory of Mr. Navarki will make it extremely difficult to suppress his European supporting agenda for Sri Tusk.
There are already questions about whether the delicate alliance of Shri Tusk can survive till the next scheduled parliamentary election in the end of 2027. Some of his political opponents are calling him to leave the post.
The decision to say a belief vote is clearly an attempt to try to rebuild the right in a transfer political situation by Shri Tusk, where some of their coalition partners want to stay with them.
Sri Tusk oversees an ideological partition, from leftist progress to centralist conservatives, an ideal of an ideological division. The divided coalition has failed to agree on some issues and the government has failed to fulfill some of the major promises of Shri Tusk, including liberalization of restrictive abortion laws.
Supported by US President Donald Trump, Mr. Navki won 50.89% votes in a tight race against Warsaw’s Mayor Rafael Tzscowski, who received 49.11%.
The election revealed deep partitions in the country with NATO and European Union’s Eastern Flank.
Navki, who took over on August 6, is expected to shape the country’s domestic and foreign policy, which can stress relations with Brussels, aligning the European nation between around 38 million people with the Trump administration.
Trump welcomed his election on his social media platform Truth social, saying: “Congratulations Poland, you chose a winner!”
Nawrocki replied to Trump on X, saying: “Thank you, Mr. President. Strong alliance with the United States, as well as partnership on close cooperation is my top priorities.”
The Navarki will replace Duda, the second five -year term ends on 6 August. The Polish Constitution limits the presidents to two conditions.
Duda invited Navarki to a meeting on Tuesday evening, and said that he believes that it will only be in the first meetings in which he will share his experiences, mainly in the field of security policy and international policy.
